James Angrove gets a record price of $1.95 million for an Okanagan vineyard!

James Angrove was able to get a record price for his vineyard!  He was the managing partner in an Okanagan vineyard and was misaligned during the economic downturn by some partners with an objective to take advantage of the weak economy.  Hostile partners with a goal to take the property, refused to agree to continue to participate in the funding of the business.  Luckily James was able to get the best price for the land with a sale price of $1.95 million in this weak economy!

James was able to deliver a fair deal to all involved by ensuring this price was paid.  He got the best price for the best return for all the partners and contractors.  If a lower price had been accepted, the contractors and other people involved in the development of the vineyard would have been left out in the cold.

James also owns another property which is closer to the lake where he is now building his winery.

Thanks James for sticking up for us!!

I understand that he will plant this spring.  He has another 5 acres to plant and he is going to do Merlot, Shyrah and I think Petit Verdot.  His vineyard location is right down by the lake and also has an amphitheatre.  Next year he is planning to begin building a $2 million house on the property as well.  This could be good for all of the contractors in the region as business is a bit slow right now.

We need vineyard developers like James in the area, because he brings in new funding to projects and helps with the change over from an orchard region to a vineyard region.   These vineyard and winery owners spend a lot more money than the orchardists and that is good for the local economy.   I understand he is looking to buy a few more vineyards and orchards in the area.  He seems to build the top vineyards in the area.  All metal posts, GSP, 2 wire irrigation and he contours with more than production in mind.  His last vineyards were contoured to maintain the beauty of the landscape.  He has a good vision.

Chardonnay and Merlot Wines

Chardonnay is a white wine made from a green skinned variety of grapes. The flavors associated with a Chardonnay are terroir and oak. It is considered to be a neutral wine, light in flavor. Many of the places around the world known for producing Chardonnay include France, Burgundy, Champagne, North America, California, Australia, Italy, and the New World Wine Regions.

There are many types of Chardonnay from dry still wines and sweet late harvest wines. If a Chardonnay has not gone through a malolactic fermentation the wine will have an apple flavor. The harder the malic acid is when it is converted through fermentation it will have a more buttery flavor.

The oak is also charred to a certain degree which introduces a toastiness flavor. Many wine tasters mistake this flavor to the grapes but it is from the charring of the oak. Some of the flavors that Chardonnay can taste like due to the charring of the oak include coconut, cinnamon, cloves, spice, smoke, cream, caramel, and vanilla.

When Chardonnay is fermented it also affects the flavor of the wine. For instance, the colder the fermentation process is the more fruity the wine tastes. These flavors include mango and pineapple. Some wineries also use yeast that is specially cultivated which gives the wines an aromatic quality.

Chardonnay is the most difficult wine to recognize in a blind tasting because there is not a distinct universal trait or style that is directly applied to the wine. There are many different flavors, blends, and more. Not all Chardonnays have a smoky note to them either.

Merlot

Merlot is made primarily from the Vitis vinifera species. The many wines associated with a merlot include the Bouchet, Bouche, Petit-Bouchet, Petit-Cabernet, Petit-Vidure, Vidure and Sauvignon Rouge. The origin of the wine is from the Bordeaux grape. It is also thought to be produced from a mutated grape from Biturica. Merlot is a red wine. The word is French and means many kinds of thrushes.

Merlot is produced in France, Italy, California, Romania, Australia, Argentina, Canada, Chile, South Africa, Croatia, Hungary, and more. The role of Merlot is to add body and softness. Some blends have a sweet taste and it is most commonly noted for the balanced acid levels.

Primotivo italys zinfandel

Zinfandel was for many years somewhat of a mystery grape, as far as its origins are concerned. Recent research in Croatia and at the University of California at Davis, using DNA profiling, has proved Zinfandel is a clone of the Croatian variety Crljenak. While it had been theorized that Zinfandel’s genetic twin, the Italian Primitivo, was the source, this grape also originally mutated from Crljenak. Further research may indicate the very first plantings migrated from Albania or Greece.

In April, 2002, the announced they are considering ruling Zinfandel and Primitivo synonymous for use on wine labels. Producers of California Zinfandel will probably object, anticipating that Italian producers with a bountiful supply would then be able to undercut the market with inexpensive Primitivo wine labeled “Zinfandel”.

Nearly as versatile as Chardonnay in the number of different styles of wine produced from it, Zinfandel only achieved widespread popularity in America, starting about 1980, as a pink, slightly sweet wine. In fact, this popularity so outstripped all other forms, that many fans think that there is actually a grape called “White Zinfandel” (there isn’t)!

Zinfandel as a red wine can be made light and fruity, much like French Beaujolais, or lively, complex and age worthy, like Cabernet or claret. It can also be made into big, ripe, high alcohol style wines that resemble Port. Zinfandel is also a component of most California “jug” wines, since it is the most widely planted red wine grape.

This vineyard proliferation can be attributed to zinfandel’s hardy nature. Adaptable to a wide range of soils and climates, its vines tend to be vigorous and productive. Zinfandel also has a frequent tendency to set a second crop.

The clusters are compact and full and the berry stems (peduncles) somewhat short. These factors make Zinfandel somewhat susceptible to bunch rot and some types of mildew. Water management is particularly critical to raising Zinfandel. Under stress from lack of moisture, it is prone to raisining. It also ripens more unevenly than most other varieties and it is not uncommon for green and raisined berries to occur within the same cluster. This tendency to can be aggravated by poorly-timed irrigation. Uneven ripening also means that machine-picking is impractical and a Zinfandel vineyard may often require a few passes, days apart, to harvest all the fruit with the same level of maturity.

Because of its vigor, generosity and resistance to vine disease, many zinfandel vineyards exist that are 75 to 100 or more years old. Zinfandel aficionados believe these “old vines” produce the best wines, because the older vineyards set smaller crops and the grapes tend to ripen more evenly.

Since just about everyone enjoys a good wine, wine gift baskets have become an increasingly popular choice for special occasion giving.

The giving of wine dates back to the Bronze Age in the Old World when fine Italian grapes were picked on royal land to produce fine wines that were sent to foreign nations and presented to other rulers as a gift. The tradition of giving a bottle of wine to celebrate any occasion is always welcomed.

Giving a wine gift certificate is another way to go because it allows the recipient to select the wine they would like. It’s easy, and they appreciate you for it. However, it does seem a bit impersonal…as if you didn’t care enough to take the time to find out which wines they prefer.

Wine gift baskets are usually given on very special occasions; such as weddings, birthdays, parties, festivals, or anniversaries, and are sold in a wide variety of types, including classic red, chardonnay, California Red, and merlot. These great gifts are always appreciated by all. Imagine how impressed your new client will be upon finding a beautiful basket waiting in their hotel room.

Wine gift baskets are available with white wines and blushes also. They are usually an especially big hit at parties as the assorted items allows everyone to share the gift by enjoying the wine and other delicious tidbits such as cheeses and chocolates. I Love German Wine and Food – a Pfalz Pinot Noir

If you are hankering for fine German wine and food, you should consider the Pfalz region of southwestern Germany. You may find a bargain, and I really hope that you’ll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour in which we review a local Pinot Noir.

The Pfalz is a narrow region about 80 kilometers long, close to the river Rhine. The Church owned the best vineyards until Napoleon redistributed them. There are about 25,000 vineyards whose average size is less than a hectare (about 2.5 acres). Given their small plots, most vineyard owners work elsewhere to make a living. While Pfalz was once the number one German wine producing region, it now ranks number two in both total wine production and vineyard acreage behind its northern neighbor, Rheinhessen. In the Pfalz, sometimes called the Tuscany of Germany, temperatures often climb into the mid ninety degrees Fahrenheit (mid thirty degrees Centigrade) and many farmers raise “southern” crops such as figs and lemons.

About 80% of Pfalz wine is white. The most widely grown grape varieties are the German developed hybrid Mueller Thurgau, and the generally higher quality Riesling. Local red grape varieties include Portugieser and to a lesser extent Pinot Noir, better known by its German name, Spaetburgunder. About 10% of Pfalz wine is classified as basic table wine, over 70% as middle of the road QbA wine, and the remainder is classified as higher quality QmP wine.

The German Wine Road crosses the Pfalz region. Virtually anywhere you go on this road you can find something worth seeing, worth tasting, and I daresay worth eating. The city of Neustadt and its suburbs are close to the halfway point of this road. Every October they host the Deutsches Weinlesefest (German Wine Harvest Festival) with many, many floats and a German Wine Queen. Make sure that you visit the Marktplatz (market square) on market days (Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday) when local farmers sell their produce. Take a look at the square’s many Baroque and Renaissance buildings and its Gothic church whose north tower boasts the largest cast-iron bell in the world. If you’re in good shape, climb the south tower and enjoy the view.

You may find it more difficult to get a glimpse of the Elwetritsche, a fabled half bird, half human creatures of the Pfalz forest. You can ride through the forest on the Kuckucksbaehnel (Steam Train) from the Eisenbahn Museum (Railroad Museum) behind the main train station. You’ll have to plan in advance because these trains run every other Sunday during the season. Finish your tour of Neustadt’s Old Town with a few medieval lanes where you will probably want to eat, drink, and shop.

Before reviewing the Pfalz wine and imported cheeses that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region. Start with Grumbeersupp (Potato Soup). For your second course enjoy Gequellde mit Lewwerworscht (Cooked Potatoes with Liver Sausage). For dessert indulge yourself with Schwarzwaelder Torte (Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Cake with Whipped Cream and Cherries).

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed Lorch Pinot Noir Classic 2004 13.5% alcohol about $14

Let’s start by quoting the marketing materials. This Pinot Noir displays pretty cherry, plum and earth tones. It is dry, light-bodied with a nice, lingering fruit/acid finish. This charming wine’s hint of tannin is softened by the lemon, while the cucumber and dill match the Pinot’s earthier tendencies.

My first pairing was with slow cooked meatballs and potatoes, accompanied by a somewhat spicy red pepper, tomato, and garlic “salsa”. This wine was round and long but not imposing. It was moderately acidic and held up well to the spices. Perhaps surprisingly I tasted some bubble gum. No it wasn’t a Beaujolais Nouveau. I like to think that I know when I’m drinking a Pinot Noir, but such wasn’t the case here. I finished the meal with a top-of-the-line chocolate mousse cake but the combination wasn’t really good. The cake and the wine didn’t meld.

My next trial involved a home made barbecued chicken that had marinated in a sweet and sour Thai sauce. The side dish was a specialty of the local supermarket, roasted potatoes cooked in chicken fat. Yummy. I found the wine nicely acidic and quite fruity. The wine’s fruit was a good match for the fruit in the marinade. On the other hand, I thought that the potatoes would bring out the earthiness of the Pinot Noir. Such was not to be.

The final meal included store bought barbecued spare ribs, rice, and saut

Wine is a very popular drink consumed by almost everyone particularly events that are very important to a person. Though seen by many as a drink only the rich can afford, wine today is consumed by almost everyone across all social categories.

How Wine Is Made

Wine is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting the juice extracted from grapes. Varieties of yeast are employed, which consume the natural sugar found in grape juice and convert them into alcohol. The result is a delectable drink that is a toast for so many occasions and for so many generations now. The process of wine making is known as vinification. This is a lengthy and delicate process that starts with selecting the right grapes to use in producing the liquor. Generally, vinification is divided into two types: production of still wine, which does not utilize the carbonation process, and sparkling wine, which makes use of the carbonation process.

Develop a Tasty Wine for Everybody

Doing so will allow anyone to produce a wine that will suit their tastes. In this aspect, wine making kits are at the forefront to provide everyone the opportunity to become a wine maker. This is because wine making kits are now sold in the same manner that home appliances are.

Common Items in Wine Making Kits

Wine making kits include several items. These include the following:

▪ Fruit wine bases. Fruit wine bases are essentially a certain type wine in concentrated form. All that a budding wine maker needs to do is to add ingredients to it such as water and sugar to produce wine.

▪ Wine enhancers. A concentrated grape juice, they are added to wine before bottling, enhancing the wine’s aroma. However, because they may contain fermentable sugars, stabilizers must be added to the mix as well.

▪ Bottles. The proper bottles must be selected to resist the fermenting action of the yeast such as in the case of sparkling wine. A bottle of inferior quality may burst at the pressure exerted.
