Not Only Wine Makes a Wine

The use of certain types of bottle for certain wine regions or wine is a practice established a long time ago. Some bottles can evoke certain characteristics or a origin and works as marketing sign to the customer mind. It is the reason why even the European Union has decided to regulate the usage of specific bottles to certain wine or wine region.

The EU regulation says the regulated specific types of bottle should have been exclusively and traditionally used for the last 25 years for a wine with particular region and it should evoke a wine with certain origin.

The EU decided to protect two types of bottles from France, Flute d’Alsace and Clavelin.

Flute d’Alsace – it is bottle of straight cylindrical body with long neck. This bottle is being used for wines produced in France with designations:Alsace, vin d’Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru, Crépy, Château-Grillet, Côtes de Provence, Cassis, Jurançon, Jurançon sec, Béarn, Béarn-Bellocq, Tavel.

Clavelin - a bottle with short neck which contains only 0,62 litres. It has a cylindrical body with broad shoulders. The bottle looks like a squat appearance. The bottle should be used for wines with origin designation: Côte du Jura, Arbois, L’Etoile and Château Chalon.

Bordeaux wines are usuallz bottled into straight-sided and high shouldered bottle. Wines from Burgundy and Rhone are in tall bottles with sloping shoulders and smaller punt. Champagne and sparkling wines generally are sold in thick-walled and wide bottles with pronounced punt and sloping shoulders.

Drinking Red Wine is Good for Your Heart, Lungs, Kidneys, Brain and More.

Red wine benefits are numerous and plentiful. Red wine benefits are generally good for you, but it is important to know the specifics of these benefits because you can then employ them to serve your body better. There are a great many benefits that red wine brings, such as its ability to help lower LDL or bad cholesterol with the body ; this is a proven fact. It is commonly said that wine can be good for our health, but it is important to understand what the specifics are of these benefits in order for us to ensure that we make best of them.

One example of this is that not many people are actually aware that this applies only to red wine and that only red wine offers these benefits, because of the certain flavnoids in the red wine that is not available in white wine. This however does not necessarily mean that white wine is completely unhealthy, rather it is the red wine benefits that we particularly look for when looking for benefits from wine. Will the Real Zinfandel Please Rise

Don’t tell me you are one of those people that think pink when you hear zinfandel. No, no, no. Zinfandel grapes are RED. Red zinfandel is the real deal. White zinfandel – the pink stuff – is just processed without the skins. Glad we cleared that up.

Originating in Italy in the 18th century, red zinfandel grapes are primarily grown in California these days. Zinfandels – or zins – are not as popular as their frontrunners merlot and cabernet sauvignon. It’s a wonder why, though. Zins are bursting with flavor – really robust and full of energy. They are a little spicy and peppery with intense hints of fruit like black cherry and blackberry, and tend to have a high alcohol content (oh well). They are not for the meek and weary – they are real “wowers” and tend to please those with brave palates.

Some tips: Drink at a cool temperature. There are wine connoisseurs who vow to sip at 65 degrees. I, however, like my reds a bit cooler at around 58 – 60 degrees. Also, zins can handle some powerful grub, so potent cheeses, kicking sauces and rich dishes are good partners.

Some favorites: for every day the Cline Zinfandel is a great choice at around $8 a bottle. The Rancho Zabaco Dancing Bull is also a popular zin, usually around $11. By far one of my personal favorites is Baron Herzog Red Zinfandel, which entertains the palate like no other, retailing between $14-$15. Ridge Vineyards specializes in red zinfandels, so it would be prudent to try on from the masters.

So spice up your life and expand your horizons. Pick up a bottle next time you automatically reach for that safe merlot or cab. Once you go zin there’s no turning back.
